France and Sweden Deploy Counter-Drone Forces to Copenhagen Ahead of EU Summits

After disruptive drone incursions over Danish airports and bases, Copenhagen tightens air security with Swedish and French military support, a German frigate offshore, and a temporary ban on civilian drones.

Sweden has deployed elements of its Armed Forces to Denmark to help counter aerial threats during two high-stakes gatherings in Copenhagen this week. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the mission includes a specialized counter-drone unit that will integrate with Danish forces. Stockholm will also lend “powerful radars” to Denmark for a defined period, he added.

France bolsters defences

France confirmed it is reinforcing Copenhagen’s air defences, citing a recent spike in unidentified drone flights over Danish airspace. Paris has sent 35 personnel, a FENNEC helicopter, and active anti-drone systems, the French Defence Ministry said, calling drones a “serious threat.”

German support at sea

A German Navy frigate, FSG Hamburg, arrived in Copenhagen over the weekend to assist with airspace surveillance as authorities harden defences around the capital.

Trigger: drone incursions and a temporary ban

The moves follow last week’s multiple drone sightings over major Danish airports and military air bases, which disrupted air traffic and stranded thousands of passengers. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen described the airspace violations as “hybrid warfare,” hinting at possible Russian responsibility. In response, Denmark temporarily closed national airspace to civilian drones.

Summit security

Copenhagen hosts a European Council session on Wednesday focused on defence and Ukraine, followed on Thursday by the European Political Community, bringing together leaders from across the continent. The reinforced counter-drone posture is intended to safeguard both gatherings amid elevated threat perceptions.
