The presidents of the European Commission and the European Council have issued a joint statement expressing serious concern over the latest developments in Iran.
Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa said the situation is “greatly concerning” and confirmed they remain in close contact with partners in the region.
They reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to regional security and stability. The two leaders said ensuring nuclear safety is of critical importance. They stressed the need to prevent any actions that could escalate tensions or weaken the global nuclear non-proliferation regime.
The statement highlighted the EU’s existing measures against Iran. It said the bloc has adopted extensive sanctions in response to actions by Iran’s regime and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. These sanctions form part of a broader EU policy aimed at responding to security concerns and alleged violations linked to Iran’s activities.
At the same time, the EU has consistently supported diplomatic efforts. The statement said Brussels continues to promote a negotiated solution to address concerns over Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes. This reflects the EU’s longstanding position that dialogue remains essential to reducing risks in the region.
The two presidents also addressed the safety of European nationals. They said that, in close coordination with EU member states, all necessary steps will be taken to ensure that EU citizens in the region can count on full support.
The statement concluded with a call for restraint. The EU urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, protect civilians and fully respect international law.
