Turkey will award the Atatürk International Peace Prize to United Nations Secretary General António Guterres, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced during the 29 October national day ceremony at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.

Erdogan’s Remarks

Erdogan praised Guterres for promoting peace and international cooperation, adding that Turkey remains committed to peace, stability and justice worldwide.

About the Atatürk International Peace Prize

The Atatürk Uluslararası Barış Ödülü is an official Turkish state distinction established in 1986 to honour individuals or organisations that contribute to peace, friendship among peoples and the advancement of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s principles.

The first award was presented in 1986 to then UN Secretary General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar in recognition of his contribution to United Nations peacekeeping missions.
