The Republican Turkish Party is moving to set the date for its leadership congress, with Kıbrıs Postası reporting that the Central Council will decide tonight following its meeting.

Field Takes Shape

The contest to succeed Tufan Erhurman as party leader is now formally under way. CTP MP Sila Usar Incirli was the first to announce her candidacy a few days ago at a large party event in Nicosia. Soon after, party secretary general and deputy chair Erkut Sahali also declared he will run, following earlier hints that he intended to do so. MP Asim Akansoy has not made a formal announcement, although he has left open the possibility that he will enter the race.

Sahali’s Pitch

Announcing his candidacy in a television interview, Erkut Sahali said he was ready to lead. "I am not of the view that I did not want it but was pressured. I am ready to become president. I have served at all levels of the party except local organisation chair and the overall presidency. I have the necessary experience and enjoy strong support inside the party," he said.

Akansoy’s Position

Asim Akansoy said a few days ago that while he does not seek the position, he has never avoided responsibility. "Whatever task I was given, I carried it out with pleasure. There is strong pressure for me to be a candidate for the presidency," he noted.

In April’s internal election for secretary general, Sahali, Akansoy and Incirli faced off over two rounds. Sahali prevailed by 40 votes to 39 over Incirli and was elected secretary general.
