A 51-year-old man has been shot dead by federal officers in Minneapolis, according to US media reports, in an incident that comes amid weeks of protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in the city.

The shooting was first disclosed publicly by Tim Walz, before reports confirmed that the man later died from his injuries.

Context of heightened tensions

The incident took place against the backdrop of sustained demonstrations opposing anti-migrant enforcement actions carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, under policies pursued by the Trump administration.

The protests intensified following the fatal shooting of Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, who was killed by an ICE agent on January 7 while sitting in her car. The White House later described Good as a “domestic terrorist,” a characterisation that sparked widespread backlash and further demonstrations.

What authorities say about the shooting

It remains unclear whether the man killed on Saturday was actively participating in the protests.

The Department of Homeland Security told the Associated Press that the individual was carrying a firearm and two magazines at the time of the encounter. DHS also released an image of a handgun it said belonged to the victim.

According to AP, crowds gathered shortly after the shooting and shouted at federal officers. NBC News reported that dozens of masked federal agents were present at the scene, while CNN said law enforcement used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Walz calls for federal withdrawal

In a post on X, Walz strongly criticised the operation, saying he had spoken with the White House following what he described as “another horrific shooting by federal agents.”

“Minnesota has had it. This is sickening,” he wrote.

“The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.”

City confirms incident, urges calm

The City of Minneapolis confirmed that the shooting occurred in the area of 26th Street West and Nicollet Avenue.

“We are working to confirm additional details,” the city said in a statement, urging the public to remain calm and avoid the immediate area.

Protests continue despite severe weather

The shooting occurred just one day after Minneapolis was hit by a major snowstorm. Despite the severe weather conditions, large-scale protests against ICE continued across the city, underscoring the depth of local anger and concern over federal immigration enforcement practices.
