Interior minister highlights role of young people in maintaining memory and driving reunification efforts.

The role of young people in the renewed effort to restart negotiations on the Cyprus issue is crucial, Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou said on Friday. He made the remarks in a speech at an event organised by the Union of Displaced Communities of Famagusta for the creation of its youth wing.

Noting that Famagusta represents for Hellenism a symbol of culture, creation, perspective and justice, the minister described the formal establishment of the youth arm as an important development, as it gives a voice to a new generation that did not experience the events of 1974 but lives with their impact through family memory and shared experiences.

“The active participation of young people ensures that the struggle for return, reunification and justice will continue until the liberation of our homeland and the restoration of human rights and fundamental freedoms,” Ioannou said, stressing that preserving memory is directly linked to maintaining the prospect of a Cyprus solution.

He added that the current period is marked by efforts to resume talks in order to create the necessary conditions for meaningful progress towards a comprehensive and sustainable solution, based on United Nations resolutions and the agreed framework.

The government, he said, remains committed to re‑establishing substantive dialogue leading to a solution that reunifies Cyprus and its people, safeguards the rights of all lawful residents and allows displaced persons to return safely to their homes.

“In this effort, the new generation has a decisive role to play. Young people can act as a bridge of memory and hope, keeping alive the just demand for return while fostering a culture of peace, cooperation and reunification,” he added.

He also noted that the state supports initiatives that strengthen youth participation, democratic engagement and collective responsibility, underlining that active youth involvement is essential for a society with continuity, resilience and prospects.
