The UN Security Council is set to receive a briefing on Cyprus on Thursday as diplomatic efforts to revive the peace process gather momentum.
Colin Stewart's successor and UN Special Representative in Cyprus, Kassim Diagne, who also heads the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), will brief Council members during closed consultations at 3pm local time (10pm Cyprus time).
The briefing will focus on UN Secretary-General António Guterres' two latest reports on his Good Offices Mission and UNFICYP.
According to information cited by CNA, expectations are growing that fresh developments on the Cyprus issue could emerge in the coming weeks.
Attention is centred on the expected return to Cyprus of the secretary-general's Personal Envoy, María Ángela Holguín, later this month as part of ongoing efforts to create conditions for the resumption of negotiations.
Reports also suggest that Guterres himself could visit Nicosia around the same period, although no official announcement has been made.
The Security Council discussion comes amid increased diplomatic activity involving the United Nations and the European Union, with both sides seeking to support efforts to restart talks on the basis of the existing UN framework.
