Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman says the Turkish Cypriot side has already accepted six of the seven confidence-building measures proposed by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, ahead of his meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides.
In a post on social media, Erhürman said he is approaching the talks with the aim of achieving concrete results.
Focus on Guterres proposals
According to Erhürman, discussions will centre on the seven confidence-building measures presented by António Guterres during his visit to Cyprus in late July.
"The agenda of today's meeting is the seven confidence-building measures proposed by Mr Guterres during his visit to the island at the end of July."
He added:
"As is well known, we have already accepted six of the seven proposals. We are attending the meeting with the aim of holding a discussion that leads to results."
Meeting under UN auspices
The meeting between Christodoulides and Erhürman is scheduled for 15:30 today in the UN buffer zone, under the auspices of the United Nations.
Erhürman's remarks come ahead of what is expected to be another round of discussions focused on confidence-building measures between the two sides.
Confidence-building measures on the agenda
The package of proposals put forward by Guterres includes:
- Opening new crossing points.
- Demining initiatives.
- Cooperation in responding to natural disasters.
- Cooperation on irregular migration.
- Sports-related measures.
- Greater participation of civil society.
- The issue of EU citizenship for children of mixed marriages.
The confidence-building measures are expected to dominate Tuesday's talks as both sides explore areas where progress may be possible.
