George Pamporides has ruled out withdrawing from the race for DISY's 2028 presidential nomination, insisting he will remain a candidate regardless of developments within the party.
"On 28 November I will be a candidate. Whatever happens before then, I will not withdraw my candidacy. Neither by persuasion nor by pressure."
Concern over party divisions
Pamporides expressed concern about what he described as a return to internal disputes within DISY, arguing that the party should be focusing on policy proposals and presenting a clear vision for the country rather than becoming consumed by internal battles.
He said the party's grassroots supporters are disappointed by recent developments and warned against continued speculation over the circumstances surrounding Annita Demetriou's withdrawal from the race.
According to Pamporides, discussions should instead focus on political substance and the future direction of the party.
"Unity does not come from slogans"
The DISY MP argued that party unity cannot be created through appeals and slogans alone.
He said genuine unity must be built around clear political positions, credible proposals and a governing programme capable of convincing voters.
Pamporides maintained that DISY should already be preparing a comprehensive policy platform ahead of the 2028 election campaign.
Warning against repeating 2023
Pamporides placed particular emphasis on the 2028 presidential election, arguing that DISY cannot afford to repeat the approach that led to the 2023 election outcome.
"If we repeat 2023, we are deserving of our misfortune."
He said the party should be shaping political developments rather than following decisions made elsewhere, arguing that DISY's history and political identity require it to play a leading role.
Backing talks with DIKO
Looking ahead to 2028, Pamporides said he favours exploring a potential cooperation agreement between DISY and DIKO.
He argued that such discussions should have begun immediately after the parliamentary elections and should already be at a more advanced stage.
According to Pamporides, relations between the two parties warrant serious consideration as part of preparations for the next presidential election.
