EU member states agreed to open accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova, marking a step forward in enlargement amid the ongoing war with Russia.

All EU member states have agreed to begin accession talks with Ukraine and Moldova, starting with the first group of chapters covering rule of law and democratic standards, Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said early Thursday on X.

“Fantastic news,” she wrote, adding that Ukraine is “one step closer” to EU membership.

The Cypriot EU presidency confirmed that preparations have begun for the formal launch of talks, describing the move as a “milestone in their European integration path” and a strong signal of EU unity. Efforts are now under way to finalise the process.

Earlier, Hungary signalled its support after reaching an agreement with Kyiv on the rights of around 100,000 ethnic Hungarians in Ukraine, an issue that had previously blocked progress.

Ukraine and Moldova have been pushing to accelerate EU enlargement amid the ongoing war with Russia, now in its fourth year.
