Efforts Ongoing for New Prison Construction

Council of Europe Development Bank is expected to provide technical support and guidance

Justice Minister Costas Fytiris, held a meeting on Wednesday with a delegation of the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB) in the context of the ongoing efforts to promote the project of the construction of new prisons. 

A press release by the justice ministry said that present at the meeting were among others Sylvie Anagnostopoulos, Country Manager for Greece and Cyprus of the Council of Europe Development Bank, Jerome Costanzo, Technical Advisor, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Giorgos Pantelis. 

During the meeting, they discussed the current situation in the Central Prisons, the needs of the penitentiary system and the next steps for the preparation of the project, focusing on the initial feasibility study, the determination of technical and operational requirements, as well as the process of securing specialized technical and advisory support, the Ministry says. 

The Council of Europe Development Bank is expected to play an important role as regards the technical preparation of the project, providing guidance and expertise, based on its experience in such projects.

The Minister of Justice underlined that the construction of new prisons is a project of great importance for the state, noting that it is directly linked to the modernization of prison infrastructure, the improvement of detention conditions, the strengthening of security and the overall smooth functioning of the system.
