Small sea turtle hatchlings made an appearance on a beach in Larnaca district, offering a rare spectacle to those in the area on Saturday afternoon.
According to the Sanida SUP Club page, the hatchlings emerged on Perivolia beach in Larnaca.
Sea turtles in Cyprus
Cyprus is one of the most important nesting grounds in the Mediterranean for two endangered sea turtle species: the loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) and the green turtle (Chelonia mydas). Sea turtles and their eggs have been protected under Cyprus law since 1971, under regulations made under the Fisheries Law.
Most nesting in the Republic of Cyprus takes place on the west coast, particularly at Lara Bay and the Akamas Peninsula in the Paphos district, considered one of the most important nesting sites in the eastern Mediterranean. However, monitoring teams also patrol other coastal areas under the Republic's control, including Larnaca and Pyrgos, where nesting occurs in smaller numbers.
