Police investigations are in full swing into a bomb blast that occurred on the night of Friday, 11 September, at a home in Sotira, Famagusta, which left the 30-year-old owner of the property critically injured.
As of late yesterday afternoon, the injured man was fighting for his life, intubated in the Intensive Care Unit of Nicosia General Hospital. According to doctors, he suffered the amputation of his right hand and multiple injuries to both legs. The explosion occurred at around 9pm. Police officers rushed to the scene, where they found the 30-year-old severely injured outside a metal garage storage unit. He was initially taken to Famagusta General Hospital, but due to the severity of his condition, it was decided that he needed to be transferred to the hospital in the capital. The scene was sealed off by police and, we understand, a number of significant pieces of evidence were recovered and sent for forensic examination. Investigators handling the case hope the results of these tests may help them solve it.
All scenarios open
At this stage, police have said they are investigating all possible scenarios in relation to the case. According to reports, the 30-year-old is known to the security authorities. Police are also seeking footage from security cameras or witness accounts that could shed light on the circumstances that led to the explosion, which shook the entire area. Police are investigating the possibility of attempted murder, but have not ruled out that the explosive device that detonated may have belonged to the 30-year-old himself. Based on the findings of bomb disposal experts who attended the scene and carried out examinations, the explosion was caused by an improvised metal explosive device. Famagusta CIDinvestigators continue to take statements and search for footage from closed-circuit surveillance cameras, in an effort to find a lead in the case.
