President Nikos Christodoulides received a congratulatory message today from UN Secretary-General António Guterres on the occasion of the Independence Day of the Republic of Cyprus.

According to an announcement by the Presidency, the UN Secretary-General said in his message that national days are important moments to reflect on a country's journey, its contribution to the international community and the aspirations that guide its future. They also serve as a reminder of the value of dialogue and solidarity in addressing international challenges.

"Urgent challenges" for the world

"The world today faces urgent challenges: ending wars and preventing new ones, tackling the climate emergency, reducing inequalities and managing powerful technology responsibly. Addressing these and other challenges requires renewed engagement and commitment to multilateral cooperation, in order to achieve peace and security, advance the Sustainable Development Goals and uphold human rights," the Secretary-General said.

"Once again, I extend my best wishes to the people of the Republic of Cyprus on this special day," he concluded.
