The disruption, which began around midday, renewed attention on the NESTOR plan for removing heavy vehicles quickly.

The crane truck that came to a standstill on the Larnaca-Nicosia motorway has been moved, bringing an end to more than seven hours of disruption for drivers. According to the latest police update, traffic is now flowing smoothly.

Vehicle moved, police say

The vehicle had stopped about one kilometre from the Rizoelia roundabout, in the direction of Nicosia, cutting off part of the left lane.

Police are still calling for extra caution from drivers passing through the area, as well as from members of the public using the wider road network.

Hours of queues

The crane truck had remained in place since around midday, causing serious traffic problems and queues stretching for kilometres. Its removal was delayed while a suitable vehicle to move it was sought.

During the disruption, police urged drivers heading from Larnaca to Nicosia to use the old road as an alternative route.

The NESTOR plan

The incident brought renewed attention to the NESTOR plan, presented by the Ministry of Justice last July with the aim of preventing lengthy traffic disruptions on motorways.

As Politis previously reported, the plan provides, among other measures, for specialised equipment for removing heavy vehicles to be made available immediately through cooperation with private companies. It remains unclear whether the plan has been put into effect.
