The idea surfaced after Steven Cheung posted a clip with her on Air Force One following a Trump rally in Michigan.

Senior figures around US President Donald Trump have publicly raised the idea of rapper Nicki Minaj becoming the next White House Press Secretary, according to Euronews. The suggestion came days after she appeared alongside the President at a rally in Michigan, and weeks after the previous press secretary stepped down after just five days in the role.

Appearance at the Michigan rally

The singer, known for hits such as “Super Bass” and “Anaconda”, attended a campaign rally in Michigan last weekend. President Trump acknowledged her presence from the stage and made remarks about her physical appearance before inviting her to speak.

Addressing the crowd, Minaj said Mr Trump had “changed the energy of the country” and given Americans “a future to look forward to”.

“It is an honour to stand with you every single time. And I will continue to support you forever and ever. If you run again, I will support you again,” she said.

Minaj has previously described herself as “probably the president’s No. 1 fan”.

The White House suggestion

Following her speech, White House Communications Director Steven Cheung shared a video of himself speaking with Minaj on board Air Force One. In the clip, she explains her support for the President, saying he “knows what to do” when it comes to the country and its economy.

Posting the clip on X, Mr Cheung wrote: “Ladies and gentlemen, I think we may have found the new White House Press Secretary!”

Trump adviser Alex Bruesewitz also appeared to back the idea, asking Minaj’s fans, known as the “Barbz”, what they thought of it.

According to Euronews, the advisers initially appeared to be joking, but there has since been increased discussion suggesting the idea is being considered.

A vacancy after a five-day tenure

The comments follow the appointment earlier this month of conservative political commentator Katie Zacharia as White House Press Secretary. She stepped down after five days following intense scrutiny.

Her short tenure drew widespread criticism online, along with questions over her description as a lawyer, as she had not passed the bar exam, Euronews reports.

Online reaction

The reports about Minaj’s potential role drew a strong reaction on social media, much of it critical of the rapper.

Minaj, whose real name is Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty, was born in Trinidad.

What prediction markets show

Despite the speculation, an appointment still appears unlikely. According to prediction market platform Kalshi, Minaj has a 3 per cent chance of becoming the next press secretary, placing her fourth. She trails Deputy White House Press Secretary Anna Kelly, CNN commentator Scott Jennings and Trump 2024 campaign senior adviser Danielle Alvarez.

On another platform, Polymarket, her chances stood at 2 per cent.
