A 43-year-old man suspected of killing 61-year-old Olga Vasilieva told police he struck her repeatedly on the head with a hammer, Limassol District Court heard on Sunday. The details were presented by police during a new remand hearing. The suspect appeared without a lawyer, telling the court he did not wish to be represented. At the first hearing the previous day, he had appeared with a lawyer.

The suspect’s statement to police
According to police, the 43-year-old admitted everything in a voluntary statement given on Saturday. He said he had been with the woman at his home where, by his own account, he became angry because she insulted him, and struck her on the head with a hammer.
He told police that he left the body in the house overnight, then returned the following day, took the body with him and drove towards Moniatis. According to his statement, he threw the hammer over a pergola at his home.
The hammer has not yet been found. Police said searches to locate it would be carried out on Sunday.
Body recovered in Moniatis
The 43-year-old then showed police the field and the spot where he had left the body. Specifically, he had placed it in a sewage drainage shaft. Members of the Disaster Response Unit (EMAK) were called to the scene and recovered the body.
Remanded for eight days
The court remanded the suspect in custody for eight days. Police said significant investigative work remains to be done before the case is fully solved.
