The Famagusta District Local Government Organisation has proceeded with the signing of contracts for the repair of faults and the reduction of losses in the water supply network. The contracts concern excavation, restoration and related works on roads and pavements for the repair of faults in the organisation’s water supply network, specifically in the areas of the Paralimni–Deryneia and Ayia Napa municipalities.
The value of each contract amounts to €972,850 plus VAT, while the duration of the works is set at 24 months or until the contract amount is exhausted. The contractor for both projects is the company L&L Excavation Contractors Ltd.
According to the announcement, through the implementation of these contracts the organisation is proceeding with targeted interventions aimed at faster repair of faults in the water supply network, with the goal of effectively addressing losses of drinking water and improving the reliability of the network in the Famagusta district. It is estimated that more than 3,000 faults will be repaired through these works, a figure considered particularly significant for tackling water losses.
The project is being implemented under the Cohesion Policy Programme THALEIA 2021–2027 with co‑funding from the European Union.
In statements, the president of the Famagusta District Organisation, Yiannis Karousos, noted that water losses in the district’s supply network reach around 36%, a particularly high percentage which, he said, affects both proper water management and the organisation’s operating costs.
“Through the contracts we have signed, we are proceeding for the first time with an organised and targeted effort to address a large number of faults in the water network, with the aim of significantly reducing drinking water losses. Additional important interventions and projects will follow for the modernisation and upgrading of the Famagusta Organisation’s water infrastructure. One of these will be the installation of smart water meters, aiming at a more modern, efficient and reliable water supply network for all citizens of our district,” Karousos said.
