US special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Moscow on Saturday for talks concerning the war in Ukraine, according to two sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Reuters.
The sources said the US envoys are expected to meet Russian presidential envoy Kirill Dmitriev during their visit.
A motorcade carrying Witkoff, Kushner and Dmitriev left a Moscow airport and headed towards the Russian capital, one of the sources told Reuters.
The visit comes as Washington continues diplomatic efforts aimed at addressing the war in Ukraine and exploring the possibility of progress towards a settlement.
Dmitriev has played a role in previous US-Russia contacts
Dmitriev said in June that he had remained in contact with US negotiators during a pause in their visits to Russia.
He had also taken part in previous meetings between the US representatives and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
His involvement has made him an important figure in contacts between Washington and Moscow as discussions over the war and wider US-Russia relations have continued.
Sanctions discussions
Dmitriev also played a role this year in negotiations concerning the suspension of US sanctions on Russian oil.
His involvement in those discussions comes against the backdrop of wider efforts to maintain communication between the two countries despite their deep disagreements over the war in Ukraine.
The latest visit by Witkoff and Kushner signals another round of high-level US-Russia contacts as Washington seeks to advance diplomatic efforts surrounding the conflict.
