Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Christofidou said that checks were carried out at 400 polling stations across the island on election day, including for the first time in the Paphos district.
She noted that a clearer picture of the final figures will emerge in the coming days, once all data has been fully assessed.
According to the Commissioner, the overall picture was positive, with no major issues recorded during the inspections. She thanked the staff of her office, as well as election officials, for their cooperation and prompt response.
Christofidou said that complaints submitted since February mainly concerned phone calls, text messages, Viber communications and two cases involving the public announcement of voters’ personal details.
She clarified that the office assesses complaints strictly in relation to personal data protection laws, particularly whether there was a lawful basis and consent for communication.
She also pointed out that the ban on advertising in the final 48 hours before elections falls outside her authority, as it does not relate to personal data protection.
The Commissioner stressed that elections and personal data protection are closely linked to democratic principles, highlighting that respect for citizens’ privacy is a matter of trust, not merely procedure.
She added that the final number of complaints will be announced in the coming days, noting that the General Data Protection Regulation marks eight years of implementation in Cyprus this May.
