The decision was taken during today’s session of the Holy Synod at the Archbishopric of Cyprus, where the final list of candidates for the Metropolitan Throne of Paphos was examined.

The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus elected Archimandrite Gregorios Ioannides (Protosyngellos of Trimythous / Dean of the Theological School) as the new Metropolitan of Paphos, filling the vacancy that arose after the removal of Metropolitan Tychikos.

Four candidates had submitted nominations for the position: Archimandrite Ioannis, abbot of the Holy Stavropegic Monastery of the Apostle Barnabas, Archimandrite Sofronios of the Monastery of Panagia Trooditissa, Archimandrite Grigorios Ioannidis, Protosyngellos of the Metropolis of Trimythous and Dean of the Theological School of the Church of Cyprus, and Archimandrite Ioannis Theocharous, Protosyngellos of the Holy Metropolis of Paphos.

The election was carried out on the basis of the new Charter of the Church of Cyprus, according to which the appointment of Metropolitans is now the responsibility of the Holy Synod.

The Metropolitan Throne of Paphos had remained vacant since 22 May 2025, when the Holy Synod decided on the removal of then Metropolitan Tychikos, with Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus serving as locum tenens since then.
