Twenty‑six excavations have been completed since the beginning of the year as part of the work of the CMP, and after the holidays of Eid al‑Adha and Kataklysmos, on 2 June the Committee’s eight teams will begin excavations, including one at a site in a military area, while at the anthropological laboratory there are the remains of five individuals for identification, in addition to earlier findings.
According to information obtained by CNA from the Greek Cypriot side regarding the CMP, the remains of two individuals found towards the end of 2025 in excavations in occupied Lefkoniko, another two in Lapithos and one in Karavas, identified on the last day of 2025, have been transferred to the identification laboratory.
From the 26 excavations carried out during the current year, over these five months, remains corresponding to two individuals were uncovered in Lapithos, where excavations will continue on 2 June after the end of the holidays. Excavations are also being conducted and will continue in Exo Metochi and Galateia. On 2 June an excavation will begin in Choulou in Paphos, on 3 June two separate excavations in Assia and Kythrea, and on 5 June in the buffer zone in Gerolakkos.
Through the CMP, ten sites in military areas have been proposed for excavation, of which work has been carried out at three: a military area on the occupied side of Deryneia, in Petra in Famagusta and near Sygchari in a mountainous area of Pella Pais. Subject to developments, excavations are expected to begin after 2 June, once approval procedures by the Turkish army are completed, in Kyra of Morphou, where the CMP’s eighth team will be deployed.
According to the same information, the CMP had previously carried out excavations with its own teams in the area of the cemetery in Tekke Bahçe in north Nicosia, but not at the site where Turkish Cypriots are buried, where excavations are currently being carried out independently by the Turkish Cypriot side.
