Summer weather is expected to dominate across Cyprus for most of the coming week, with temperatures forecast to rise significantly on Sunday and Monday before returning closer to seasonal averages from Tuesday.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Meteorological Service officer Panayiotis Georgiou said the main exception would be Saturday, when isolated showers and a possible thunderstorm are expected in some areas.
Showers and possible thunderstorms on Saturday
Isolated showers may occur until Saturday afternoon, particularly in inland and mountainous areas, with thunderstorms also possible.
Should thunderstorms develop, hail cannot be ruled out, Georgiou said.
Winds will be light to moderate, at three to four Beaufort, although they could reach five Beaufort along southern coastal areas.
The weather phenomena are expected to subside by late afternoon.
Tonight, conditions will be mainly clear, although increased low cloud is expected, particularly in coastal areas. Fog may also develop over the eastern half of the island and inland.
Temperatures set to climb
From Sunday, conditions are expected to be mainly clear, with no significant atmospheric instability forecast.
Temperatures are expected to rise, with inland areas reaching around 35C on Saturday and potentially 37C on Sunday.
A further increase of one to two degrees is possible on Monday, when temperatures could reach as high as 39C inland.
Cooler from Tuesday
Temperatures are expected to begin falling from Tuesday, dropping by around two degrees initially and by up to three degrees by the middle of next week.
By then, temperatures are expected to be around 35C inland and 30C along the coast, which Georgiou said are close to the seasonal averages.
Little rainfall expected
Asked whether rainfall is expected during the coming week, Georgiou said no significant rainfall is currently forecast.
There is some possibility of light rain after Thursday, mainly in inland and mountainous areas, but only limited rainfall is expected.
“No phenomena are expected until Wednesday, which is the last day of the forecast,” he said.
Temperatures expected to remain near seasonal averages
Looking further ahead, Georgiou said that once temperatures return to around seasonal averages after Tuesday, no extreme changes are currently expected.
Only relatively small fluctuations of around one degree above or below the seasonal average are anticipated.
Temperatures are expected to remain close to seasonal averages at least until the end of the following week, he said.
