Limassol Municipality has issued clarifications on ongoing roadworks in parts of the city, saying the projects fall under the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan and are being implemented by the Public Works Department.
The works concern Theklas Lysioti, Emmanouil Roidi and Nikou Pattichi streets, as well as the area around the courts. According to the municipality, they are part of two separate phases and two different contracts, which include the creation of cycle lanes and bus lanes on coastal routes and within the urban network.
The municipality said the Municipal Council had examined the proposals several times and taken decisions at meetings held in June 2023 and March 2024. During those meetings, it set out conditions, recommendations and concerns regarding the gradual introduction of bus lanes on Nikou Pattichi Street and 28 October Avenue, with the aim of preserving the city’s functionality and economic activity.
According to the announcement, the council’s positions and conditions were formally sent to the Ministry of Transport in a letter in August 2024.
Limassol Municipality also said that a bus lane can only serve its purpose if frequent and reliable bus services are ensured. It noted that bus lanes cannot be justified by services running every 40 minutes or every hour, but require denser timetables.
Regarding Theklas Lysioti and Emmanouil Roidi streets, the municipality said roadside parking spaces and cycle lanes have been created, but added that specific design issues requiring improvement have been identified. Particular reference was made to Anastasi Sioukri Street, near Gladstonos Street, as well as other points concerning Emmanouil Roidi and Theklas Lysioti streets.
Based on information from the Public Works Department, the contractor is expected to complete the works by the end of June. The municipality said it would then proceed with the necessary actions and interventions to ensure the smooth operation of the road network.
It also clarified that the current works do not include the construction of pavements, which will be carried out by Limassol Municipality after the contractor completes the roadworks.
