US President Donald Trump on Wednesday suggested renaming the Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait”, just days after signing an order to rename Lake Ontario, which borders the US and Canada, as “Lake America”.
“Now that we have it under the control of the United States, should we rename the Strait of Hormuz the ‘Trump Strait’?” Trump wrote on Truth Social, his social media platform.
The suggestion comes amid the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran, which began on 28 February with Israeli and US strikes against Iran.
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically important maritime passage and has remained at the centre of tensions between Washington and Tehran since the conflict began.
Iran has closed the strategic waterway since the start of the war, which erupted on 28 February following Israeli and US strikes against the country.
