This round is expected to push the co‑design process further, refining specific issues and identifying the uses the public would like to see included in the redevelopment of the city’s flagship commercial street. The workshop will present findings from the 15 previous actions and meetings, giving participants an overview of the initial outcomes and how public consultation has shaped preferences for the street’s future.
Participants will also be invited to define more clearly proposals related to design criteria, including culture, public space, greenery, mobility and other elements affecting the area.
Need for people‑centred redesign
Discussions and participatory mapping carried out so far have highlighted a strong need to redesign the street with a focus on people, daily life and the public experience of the city.
Participants identified Anexartisias primarily as a transit corridor for vehicles, with limited space for stopping, socialising and spending time. Key problems include narrow pavements, heavy traffic, lack of shade and greenery, poor accessibility for people with reduced mobility, and the presence of abandoned or inactive buildings that affect the area’s overall image.
Proposals for public space and connectivity
There was strong emphasis on increasing public space, including proposals to widen pavements, create unified movement levels and enhance areas for gathering and interaction.
Participants also suggested exploring the creation of new squares or smaller public spaces where possible, to strengthen social and cultural life in the city centre.
Additional proposals included more cultural activities, open‑air markets, green areas, shaded spaces, water features and activities for all age groups. The aim is to transform Anexartisias into a more welcoming, accessible and vibrant public axis.
The importance of linking the street with surrounding areas such as public squares, arcades, the seafront promenade, Heroes Square and particularly the Administrative Square was also highlighted, as it is seen as a central hub of social and cultural activity.
Next steps
An open online questionnaire remains available at anexartisias.com until 31 May. Following the workshop, the study team will prepare a preliminary design, expected to be presented at the end of July.
