The United States has restored Cyprus to its standard Travel Advisory level, placing it at Level 1 and advising travellers to exercise normal precautions.
According to the US Department of State, Cyprus is generally considered a safe destination for visitors.
However, the advisory includes specific warnings. Travellers are cautioned not to attempt crossing the United Nations buffer zone anywhere other than designated crossing points, where restrictions are strictly enforced.
The update follows a period of regional instability earlier this year. After hostilities between the United States and Iran on 28 February, significant disruptions to commercial flights were recorded. On 2 March, a drone also struck a building within the British Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus.
At the same time, the United Kingdom updated its own travel guidance, maintaining Cyprus among destinations for which there is no advice against travel, while also lowering the assessed level of risk.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, these developments reflect the country’s image as a safe and high-quality travel destination.
The advisory calls for increased caution in the area administered by Turkish Cypriots, citing unrest and limited consular support. It notes that the US Embassy in Nicosia has restricted ability to assist American citizens in that area.
It also states that human rights reports indicate that prison and police detention facilities there do not meet international standards. The United States reiterates that it does not recognise the self-declared “TRNC”.
US citizens are advised to enter and exit Cyprus only through the legal points of entry: Larnaca and Paphos airports, and the seaports of Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos.
The advisory warns that travellers using the airport in the north may face difficulties returning to the Republic of Cyprus in the future.
It also notes that residence permits issued in areas not under the control of the Republic of Cyprus are not recognised, and that the Republic does not issue permits for those areas.
The return to Level 1 represents the lowest risk category in the US travel advisory system, indicating no unusual safety concerns for travellers.
A positive development for Cyprus’ image as a travel destination is reflected in the updated travel advisories issued by the United States of America and the United Kingdom.
