Although the cases under investigation appear similar to previous incidents in Limassol, information suggests this is a separate network, involving different perpetrators and organisers. The case concerns an organised group combining extortion, threats and arson attacks with the aim of extracting money from business and economic activities.
The investigation came to light following a probe into an arson attack on a property in Germasogeia. However, investigators believe the incident may represent only part of a broader campaign of pressure and intimidation. So far, inquiries have expanded to several cases sharing common characteristics, including similar methods, individuals involved and possible motives.
Following the arrest of two 20-year-old Syrians, investigators have linked the case to five additional serious incidents recorded in recent months. The alleged victims include a 40-year-old businessman, a 58-year-old man, his two sons aged 34 and 23, and a 54-year-old businessman active in the investment sector.
According to evidence presented before Limassol District Court, the threats and criminal actions appear to stem from financial disputes linked to a business relationship between a wanted individual and the complainants. The case also involves financial claims amounting to approximately €300,000.
Prison inmate under investigation
A 44-year-old inmate at Central Prisons is also at the centre of the investigation and has been arrested under a court warrant. Authorities are examining information and testimony linking him to the direction of criminal activities, while also investigating his connection to a wanted individual believed to be outside prison.
Testimony from individuals already arrested in connection with the case is considered crucial. According to statements under assessment, specific instructions were allegedly given to target businesses and property in exchange for payment. Investigators are examining claims that targets were selected after financial disputes or significant monetary demands had arisen.
Cases under review
As part of the investigation, police are re-examining cases involving vehicle arson, attempted property damage, the use of incendiary devices and threatening messages reportedly sent through online communication platforms. According to complaints, some victims were pressured to pay substantial sums of money, while refusals were allegedly followed by threats or attacks on business operations.
Authorities are also analysing financial transactions, telecommunications data and contacts between individuals believed to be involved. Establishing whether the attacks are interconnected and whether a consistent method was used to select targets is seen as a key priority.
Focus on digital evidence
Particular emphasis is being placed on electronic evidence obtained during the investigation, including mobile phones seized from Central Prisons from which specific messages were sent. Investigators are analysing communication data, photographic material and other information that may link individuals, locations and incidents under investigation.
