The journalistic community in Cyprus and Greece is mourning the death of veteran reporter and broadcaster Giorgos Tsalakos, who played a pioneering role in the development of television news.
Tsalakos had a long career in journalism, serving for decades in senior editorial and managerial positions.
Born in Lysi in Famagusta district, he studied law at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens before beginning his career in Greece as a columnist for Anti magazine and a news editor at Exormisi newspaper.
From 1981 to 1990 he worked at the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT) as a political correspondent and news editor-in-chief.
After returning to Cyprus, he helped establish and develop three private television stations – ANT1 Cyprus, Alpha Cyprus and Omega Channel – holding senior roles in news operations.
He also served as chairman of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation (CyBC) board from 2013 to 2015 and was a member of the board of the Cyprus News Agency.
Alongside his journalism career, he was an author. His work includes the book Spyros Kyprianou – In the battle of history as I lived it (Volume I), published by Patakis.
