Police have arrested three 18-year-olds in connection with the attack on a 47-year-old Turkish Cypriot man in Ayia Napa, who is being treated in a serious but stable condition at Nicosia General Hospital.
The three suspects were arrested in the early hours of Sunday on the basis of court warrants as part of an investigation into a case of grievous bodily harm in Famagusta district.
They have been taken into custody to facilitate police inquiries and are expected to appear before the Famagusta District Court for the issuance of remand orders.
Found injured on a road
The 47-year-old was found injured on a road in Ayia Napa at around 6am on Sunday following information received by police.
He was initially taken to Famagusta General Hospital, where doctors determined that he had suffered a brain haemorrhage and a fracture at the base of the skull.
Due to the seriousness of his condition, he was intubated and transferred to Nicosia General Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition, according to his treating physicians.
Alleged attack by a group
Police investigations secured testimony indicating that the 47-year-old was allegedly attacked by a group of unknown individuals, resulting in serious injuries.
Investigators subsequently focused their efforts on identifying and arresting those believed to have been involved in the assault.
Authorities in the north monitoring the case
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman also commented on the incident, stating that authorities in the north were informed immediately after it occurred.
According to a written statement, officials are in contact with the victim's family as well as the relevant authorities on both sides, and are closely monitoring both his medical condition and developments in the investigation.
Erhürman also wished the 47-year-old a speedy recovery.
