Two July cases involved a woman with a travel history and a hospital staff member; both have since been discharged.

Two dengue fever cases were recorded in Cyprus in July, according to the State Health Services Organisation (Okypy). One involved a woman with a travel history, while the second was a healthcare professional exposed to her blood during treatment.

How the two cases were linked

The woman attended the Accident and Emergency Department of a state hospital after developing symptoms.

During her examination, a healthcare professional came into contact with her blood and subsequently contracted the virus.

Okypy said both patients had been discharged several days earlier.

West Nile virus patient remains in intensive care

The update follows reports that an elderly patient is being treated at Nicosia General Hospital after contracting West Nile virus.

The 70-year-old man remains in serious condition in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.

Infectious diseases specialist Aristos Aristodemou said the case falls within the very small proportion of West Nile virus infections that can cause a serious infection of the central nervous system.

Such complications usually affect elderly or immunocompromised patients, although this is not always the case.
