Cyprus recorded the European Union’s highest proportion of household energy consumption devoted to space cooling in 2024, according to Eurostat.
Cooling accounted for 16% of final household energy use on the island, narrowly ahead of Malta at 15%.
Cooling demand doubles across the EU
Energy used by EU households for cooling reached 80,400 terajoules in 2024, almost double the 40,500 terajoules recorded in 2018.
Consumption increased each year during that period, apart from declines of 2.5% in 2020 and 1.9% in 2023.
Cyprus records the highest share
While Cyprus and Malta led in terms of cooling’s share of household consumption, larger countries recorded the highest overall amounts of energy used.
Italy ranked first with 26,300 terajoules, followed by Spain with 14,300 and Greece with 11,900.
Cooling represented 7.4% of household energy consumption in Greece, compared with 2.5% in Spain and 2.3% in Italy.
