The AKEL leader and China's new envoy discussed the Cyprus issue and prospects for stronger bilateral ties.

AKEL Secretary-General Stefanos Stefanou met yesterday with China's new ambassador to Cyprus, Yang Yundong, whom he welcomed to the island. Stephanou was accompanied by Vera Polycarpou, head of International Relations and European Policy at AKEL.

During the meeting, Stefanou briefed the Chinese diplomat on the current state of the Cyprus issue and the efforts of the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy to create the conditions for the resumption of negotiations from where they left off in 2017, with the aim of achieving a bizonal, bicommunal federation with political equality, in line with UN resolutions.

In that context, he expressed appreciation for the supportive role played by China as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

The meeting also highlighted satisfaction with the current level of bilateral relations between Cyprus and China, as well as confidence in the potential for further cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

Stephanou emphasised the importance AKEL places on its relations with the Communist Party of China, which he said are based on mutual respect and a shared aspiration for a world of cooperation and peace.
