The Fire Service, in cooperation with the Police, is investigating the cause of a wildfire that broke out on Tuesday north of the Ergates industrial area in Nicosia district.
According to the Fire Service, the blaze burned approximately seven hectares of dry grass, low wild vegetation, crop residue, hay bales and a number of trees.
Large-scale response
Ten fire engines from Nicosia fire stations were deployed to tackle the blaze.
The operation was supported by:
- The Department of Forests, with two fire engines and a portable firefighting unit
- The Game and Fauna Service
- The Civil Defence, with portable firefighting units
- The District Administration, with two excavators and a water tanker
- Volunteer groups SupportCY and ATLAS-DIAS
Four firefighting aircraft also carried out successive water drops.
Property damaged
The fire and intense heat caused damage to several structures, abandoned vehicles and machinery.
Dry vegetation beneath a photovoltaic park was also affected.
Firefighters protected isolated properties and a concrete production site that were threatened by the advancing flames.
Crews remain on site
Fire Service personnel remained at the scene overnight to carry out final extinguishing operations, respond to any flare-ups and maintain precautionary patrols.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
