Cyprus is developing a new digital platform that will allow government agencies to share information on violence-related incidents with the aim of identifying risks early, preventing escalation and enabling coordinated intervention.
Justice and Public Order Minister Costas Fytiris convened two successive meetings on July 31 and today, Tuesday, to discuss the creation of the electronic platform for the prevention and early management of violent incidents, the ministry said in a statement.
Participants included the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection, the Commissioner for Gender Equality, and representatives of the Ministries of Education, Sport and Youth, the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, Social Welfare Services and the Police.
Information sharing
According to the ministry, the initiative aims to establish an integrated system through which competent authorities will be able, under clearly defined procedures, to exchange the information necessary for handling incidents involving all forms of violence.
The platform is intended to facilitate the early identification of risk factors, prevent the escalation of violence and enable immediate and coordinated intervention by the relevant services, with priority given to protecting victims and individuals who may be at risk.
The ministry said a preliminary proposal on the structure and operation of the system was presented at Tuesday's meeting, while participants examined the practical, technical and legal aspects of its implementation.
Particular emphasis was placed on establishing the necessary legal basis for the system, introducing safeguards, protecting the rights of those involved and ensuring full compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation and existing legislation.
Participants also examined how gender considerations could be incorporated into the design and operation of the platform.
The ministry said the initiative concerns the creation of an operational tool covering all forms of violence and is separate from a statistical data collection system on violence against women and domestic violence, which Cyprus is developing as part of its European obligations.
The agencies involved will continue work on the proposal with the aim of establishing a functional, secure and legally robust system, the statement said.
