Cyprus’ Department of Forests has carried out a pilot test of a new fire-retardant liquid that can be used both preventively and to help extinguish forest fires. A video released by the department shows the material being tested.
According to the Department of Forests, which operates under the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment, the biodegradable and environmentally friendly material can be applied preventively to dry vegetation.
How the material works
The liquid remains effective for several months, provided there is no rainfall. If a fire breaks out, it slows its spread and helps prevent the flames from advancing.
The same material can also be used on an active fire front. The Department of Forests said it demonstrated greater firefighting effectiveness than water during the test.
Results to be evaluated
The pilot trial forms part of efforts to upgrade the tools available to the Department of Forests for tackling wildfires.
The results will now be analysed and evaluated, with the aim of further improving Cyprus’ forest fire prevention and suppression system.
