Police have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with an investigation into the alleged trafficking of drugs involving almost 43kg of khat seized at Larnaca Airport in February 2024.
The suspect was arrested on Tuesday upon his arrival in Cyprus and was placed under a five-day detention order by the Larnaca District Court on Wednesday.
The investigation is being conducted by the Drug Law Enforcement Unit (DLEU), known as YKAN.
Nearly 43kg of khat found in unclaimed suitcases
According to Police, the case concerns the alleged illegal importation of 42.95kg of khat plant material.
The substance was discovered on 29 February 2024 in two unclaimed suitcases at Larnaca Airport.
The two pieces of luggage had arrived at the airport from an overseas destination on 25 February 2024, but were not collected by any person.
Police said the drugs were discovered during a joint operation involving YKAN and the Department of Customs.
As part of the procedure to return the unclaimed luggage to its country of origin, Customs officers searched the two suitcases on 29 February.
The search resulted in the discovery and seizure of the khat, with a total gross weight of 42kg and 950g.
Suspect arrested on arrival in Cyprus
As part of the continuing investigation, a court warrant was issued for the arrest of the 20-year-old.
Police said he arrived at Larnaca Airport on Tuesday afternoon on a flight from abroadand was arrested under the warrant.
He appeared before the Larnaca District Court on Wednesday, which ordered that he be held in custody for five days.
YKAN’s Larnaca District Office is continuing its investigation into the case.
