Two 20-year-olds were arrested in Ayia Napa shortly after midnight in connection with the alleged possession and circulation of counterfeit €200 banknotes.
The arrests followed information received by police officers while carrying out a foot patrol in the area. Police alerted by business staff.
According to a statement from the Cyprus Police Communications Branch, officers were informed about two customers at a business who had allegedly attempted to pay using banknotes believed to be counterfeit.
Officers went to the premises, where employees handed them two €200 banknotes that appeared to be counterfeit and pointed out the two individuals who had allegedly attempted to use them. Five €200 notes seized Police identified the two individuals as 20-year-olds. During subsequent checks, officers found three additional €200 banknotes in their possession which did not carry the required security features.
The two were arrested for offences allegedly committed in the presence of police and were taken into custody. All five €200 banknotes were seized as evidence and will undergo further examination.
The Famagusta Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is continuing its investigation.
