Cyprus generated the highest amount of food waste per person among European Union member states with available data in 2024, according to figures released by Eurostat on Tuesday.
Food waste in Cyprus reached 295 kilogrammes per person, compared with an EU average of 129kg.
Cypriot households generated 78kg of food waste per capita, against 69kg across the EU. Restaurants and catering services produced 34kg per person in Cyprus, compared with 15kg in the bloc.
The food and beverage manufacturing sector generated 73kg of food waste per capita in Cyprus, nearly three times the EU average of 25kg.
In retail trade and other food distribution activities, waste amounted to 62kg per person in Cyprus, compared with 10kg across the EU.
Primary production generated 48kg of food waste per capita in Cyprus, against 10kg in the EU.
Across the EU, total food waste reached 57.9 million tonnes in 2024, up 0.7% from 57.5 million tonnes in 2023. The figures include both edible and inedible parts of food.
