Construction has begun on a major regeneration project aimed at restoring and upgrading the historic centre of Oroklini, marking the first infrastructure project in the municipality to be co-funded by European funds since Cyprus' local government reform.
The project will be carried out by CLOUDCON LTD under an 18-month contract and is expected to cost €3.5 million.
Preserving the traditional neighbourhood
The redevelopment is designed to enhance and showcase the village's historic core through a range of improvements, including:
- Stone paving and streetscape upgrades
- Underground installation of utility services
- Preservation and enhancement of the area's traditional character
- Replacement of street lighting with modern systems
- Maintenance and upgrading of existing infrastructure
- Preparatory provisions for the future sewerage network
The sewerage system is expected to be introduced from 2028 as part of the fourth phase of the Larnaca Sewerage System, which will also cover Aradippou, Livadia and Pyla.
Works will be carried out along:
- Independence Street
- Georgiou Fotiou Street
- Antheon Street
- Agias Aikaterinis Street
- Andreas Demetriou Street
- Eirinis Street
The project was developed through cooperation between the Municipality of Larnaca and the Oroklini municipal district and has been approved by the Directorate-General for European Funds of the Ministry of Interior for inclusion in the Rural Development Programme and the Common Agricultural Policy Strategic Plan 2023–2027.
Funding will come from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
Temporary traffic arrangements
Parking has been prohibited on roads where works are taking place, with alternative parking areas designated nearby.
Residents of affected streets will continue to have pedestrian access to their properties throughout the construction period.
The contractor is required to ensure safe and uninterrupted access to homes and businesses, while residents are being urged to cooperate during the works.
Local authorities view the regeneration project as a key investment in improving the area's image and supporting its continued development.
Oroklini has become one of the fastest-growing residential and tourism areas in the wider Larnaca district, with several traditional homes already converted into restaurants, galleries, businesses and holiday accommodation.
Plans for open-air amphitheatre
Meanwhile, Neofytos Fakontis, deputy mayor of Oroklini, told Politis that the Municipality of Larnaca is expected to launch an architectural competition this month for the construction of an open-air amphitheatre in Europe Park.
The proposed venue would have a capacity of around 1,000 seats and would also include:
- A café
- A children's playground
Fakontis said the aim is to complete architectural plans during 2027 so that permit applications can be submitted promptly and the project can compete for funding under the THALEIA 2028-2034 programme.
He also noted that Oroklini has already completed the regeneration of three parks using European funding and has upgraded lighting at both the municipal stadium and another public park.
