An indefinite strike began on Wednesday morning at K-Pet’s fuel storage and distribution facilities in Gastria, in the north, halting supplies to the company’s fuel stations.
The Turkish Cypriot Petroleum Workers’ Union called the strike after the employer refused to withdraw dismissal warnings concerning nine workers.
Semih Kolozali, president of the Turkish Cypriot Federation of Revolutionary Workers’ Unions (Dev-İş), said the employer was insisting on dismissals despite the evidence suggesting otherwise, and supported by the 'government'.
Kolozali said the relevant board decision had been taken improperly, without the required approval of the competent 'ministry', and questioned the legality of the procedure by which it was adopted.
He added the company currently employs 34 people, including management, while at least 40 are needed for it to operate properly. The possible dismissal of the nine workers would further worsen the staff shortage.
The trade unionist said the workers remained open to dialogue and were calling for the “legislation” and “regulations” to be applied. He also called on fuel station operators to show understanding.
