Student Grant Applications: 800 Rejected Over Errors

Around 800 applications for student grants were rejected due to incorrectly completed information, according to Lakis Mythillos, head of the Grants and Benefits Service at the Ministry of Finance.

Speaking to Politis radio, Mythillos said most of the problems stemmed from the way applications were submitted. In many cases, parents listed themselves as the student instead of their child, meaning the actual beneficiary was not included in the application.

“The parents were required to submit the application, but they did not declare the student anywhere. Instead, they entered themselves as the student,” he said.

Deadline for corrections

The ministry deliberately rejected the affected applications early to give applicants time to correct the mistakes and resubmit.

The deadline for resubmission is Tuesday, 2 June. All affected applicants have been notified, with messages explaining the reason for rejection and the steps needed to submit a correct application.

“The system asks for the student”

Responding to criticism about the clarity of the online system, Mythillos said the instructions were clear.

“At the start of the application, you are asked to enter the student,” he said, adding that the system is being continuously improved. He acknowledged that there were also other types of submission errors.
