All monitored bathing sites in Cyprus rated ‘excellent,’ placing the country first in the EU and well above the European average.

Cyprus continues to rank first in the European Union in terms of bathing water quality, according to the latest annual report by the European Environment Agency and the European Commission released today.

Specifically, 100% of monitored bathing sites in Cyprus were classified in the highest category of “excellent quality,” a performance that places the country at the top among EU member states. Greece follows with 97.1%, while Bulgaria and Austria are also among the top-performing countries.

Cyprus’s performance significantly exceeds the European average, with 85% of bathing waters across the EU meeting the strictest “excellent” quality standards. At the same time, 96% of all monitored sites complied at least with the minimum quality requirements set by European legislation.

The report shows that bathing water quality in Europe remains at high levels, with coastal areas performing better than inland waters. Specifically, 88% of coastal bathing sites were rated as excellent, compared with 78% of rivers and lakes.

According to the data, the overall picture in Europe remained stable compared to the previous year, while only 1.5% of bathing sites were classified as being of poor quality.

The new distinction confirms the consistently high quality of Cyprus’s coastal waters, further strengthening the country’s profile as a safe and attractive destination for swimmers and tourists.
