Heavy rainfall affected parts of western Cyprus overnight, with motorists urged to exercise caution on several major roads.

October has arrived in Cyprus with a distinctly autumnal feel, bringing rain, cloud cover and a noticeable change in weather conditions across parts of the island.

From Thursday night, Paphos and Limassol became the focus of the weather system, with rainfall recorded in various areas and heavier downpours reported in some locations.

Videos captured overnight showed rain becoming increasingly intense after a day in which the strongest weather activity had been concentrated elsewhere on the island.

Weather shifts westward

On Thursday, showers and isolated thunderstorms mainly affected parts of Nicosia and Larnaca, as instability was concentrated over inland and eastern areas.

Conditions gradually shifted westwards during the evening, bringing wetter weather to Paphos and Limassol.

Heavy rain affects highways

Meanwhile, heavy rainfall was reported at various points along the Limassol-Paphos motorway, resulting in water accumulation on sections of the carriageway near Polemidia.

Water was also reported on parts of the Nicosia-Limassol motorway near Kakoratzia and Choirokoitia, as well as the Larnaca-Ayia Napa motorway in the Kosi and Oroklini areas.

Drivers are being urged to exercise caution, reduce speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and keep their headlights on while travelling in affected areas.
