PASYKAF is concluding its campaign marking May as a month dedicated to raising awareness about smoking cessation, with a focus on prevention, young people and the growing appeal of new nicotine products.
“May is internationally recognised as a month dedicated to information and awareness on tobacco-related issues, a period that reminds us of the serious impact of tobacco and nicotine products on health, as well as the need for stronger prevention, especially among young people,” PASYKAF said in a statement.
This year, the organisation is highlighting the increasing attractiveness of new nicotine products, tobacco industry practices targeting young people and the need for a new national tobacco control strategy.
PASYKAF is also informing the public about the early recognition of symptoms and lung cancer awareness, noting that smoking remains the leading cause of lung cancer worldwide, accounting for 85% to 90% of cases.
Smokers face up to 20 times greater risk of developing lung cancer, while quitting smoking remains the most important preventive measure for significantly reducing that risk, the organisation said.
PASYKAF said particular attention should be paid to symptoms that are often ignored because they may appear harmless.
A persistent cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, unexplained weight loss and recurring infections are among the most common warning signs and should not be ignored, especially if they persist for more than three weeks.
Smoking is the main risk factor for lung cancer. Other important factors include exposure to second-hand smoke, asbestos or radon, air pollution and family history, PASYKAF said.
