The Organisation of Greek Secondary Education Teachers of Cyprus (OELMEK) has called for the immediate operation of installed air conditioning units in schools and the completion of outstanding installation works, arguing that students and teachers continue to work in difficult conditions amid high temperatures.
In a statement, the union said many classrooms still do not have functioning air conditioning systems despite previous announcements and implementation timetables, raising concerns about the impact on teaching and learning conditions.
Concerns over classroom conditions
OELMEK said a significant number of teaching spaces remain without operational cooling systems, leaving students and teachers exposed to high indoor temperatures for prolonged periods.
The organisation argued that it is difficult to speak of a modern and humane education system when lessons are conducted under conditions of significant heat stress.
Union says issue concerns health and safety
The teachers' union stressed that air conditioning in classrooms is not a matter of comfort or luxury.
According to OELMEK, the issue relates primarily to health, safety and the provision of appropriate learning and working conditions for both students and staff.
Criticism of delays
Addressing the Ministry of Education, the union said explanations for the continuing delays are no longer sufficient.
It argued that any technical, electrical or other implementation difficulties fall within the responsibility of the state and should have been anticipated and addressed earlier.
"Excuses do not reduce the temperature inside classrooms and do not provide relief to either students or teachers," OELMEK said.
Call for faster implementation
The organisation urged the state and all competent authorities to take immediate action to accelerate procedures.
It called for the activation of air conditioning units that have already been installed and for the completion of remaining installations without further delays.
OELMEK concluded that, in 2026, air conditioning in school classrooms should not be regarded as a luxury.
