Officials from the Office of the Commissioner for Personal Data Protection will carry out inspections at polling stations during the upcoming parliamentary elections, Commissioner Maria Christofidou has announced.
The checks are aimed at ensuring compliance with personal data protection legislation throughout the electoral process.
According to the announcement, inspections will focus on whether the electoral registers made available to parties and candidates contain only the personal data of voters that is strictly necessary.
It is also stressed that, during voting, officials should not call out voters’ identity card numbers. Instead, they should refer to the number of the electoral booklet, in order to avoid the disclosure of personal data to unauthorised persons.
The announcement further notes that, once the electoral process has been completed, electoral registers and any notes taken should not be used for any other purpose and must be properly destroyed.
