President Nikos Christodoulides said on Sunday night that both the Democratic Alignment (DIPA) and the Socialist Movement (EDEK) deserved to be in the new House of Representatives, noting that their absence was decided by only a handful of votes. "They deserved to be there," he said.
The President said the electoral process had been completed smoothly, thanking all those who worked with professionalism and responsibility to ensure the elections were properly organised and conducted. He described the day as belonging to democracy and to the citizens of Cyprus, and said the verdict of the Cypriot people commands full respect.
Christodoulides congratulated all candidates and political forces for their participation and extended his congratulations to those elected, conveying a message of cooperation to the new House. On the work ahead for the government, he said it would continue to implement its programme with consistency, focusing on strengthening the economy, carrying out reforms to improve everyday life for citizens, and building a Cyprus that is resilient and credible.
He reaffirmed his commitment to social liberalism and said the government's course would continue through institutional cooperation and responsibility. Key priorities including tax reform, foreign policy, the European orientation of Cyprus, and issues of security and migration would be judged in practice rather than by slogans, he said, on the basis of the social contract with citizens.
Closing his remarks, Christodoulides stressed that the government would cooperate institutionally with the new House in a spirit of understanding and responsibility, wherever common ground and convergences exist, adding that the day after the elections demands collective responsibility and respect for the popular verdict.
