Attention may be focused on the election of the next Speaker of the House, but political activity is also intensifying in Aglantzia, which is heading towards a by‑election following the election of Andreas Constantinou as a Nicosia MP with DISY.
The vote is scheduled for 28 June and will fill a vacancy in local government. Interest is expected to be high, given that Aglantzia is one of the largest municipal districts within the Nicosia municipality.
Names under consideration
Within DISY, two names currently under consideration are municipal councillors Christos Liverdos and Prokopis Prokopiou, both of whom have an established presence in local affairs. No final decision has been made, with discussions still ongoing within the party leadership and local structures.
Similar consultations are under way within AKEL, although the party has not yet made its intentions public. According to information, Michaella Kythreotou and Evangelia Aletra are among those who could be considered, both with involvement in local public life.
Election timetable
The head of the Electoral Service, Menelaos Vasileiou, confirmed that the by‑election for the position of deputy mayor of Aglantzia will take place on 28 June.
A proposal to hold the vote on 5 July was dismissed, with the final decision reflecting both legal requirements and practical considerations.
According to the schedule, the Interior Minister’s decree formally calling the election will be published on 5 June. On 12 June, the Returning Officer will announce the venue and process for candidate nominations, which will be submitted on 18 June.
Legislation on local government stipulates that vacancies for deputy mayor must be filled within 45 days.
Electoral landscape
The by‑election follows Constantinou’s departure from the role, having been elected mayor of Aglantzia in 2020 and later assuming the position of deputy mayor following the local government reform and the creation of the unified Nicosia municipality.
According to official data, 15,130 voters were registered in Aglantzia in the last election, with 9,253 participating, representing turnout of 61.16%.
Constantinou, backed by DISY, won with 5,938 votes or 70.44%, compared with 2,492 votes or 29.56% for AKEL‑backed candidate Costas Fotiou.
