Direct Democracy will ultimately be represented by its leader, Fidias Panayiotou, rather than Mike Spanos at Monday’s National Council meeting, according to information obtained by Politis.
Panayiotou and Spanos met last Tuesday, when Spanos reportedly expressed his wish not to represent the party on the advisory body.
National Council discusses Cyprus issue
The meeting began at 10.30 under President Nikos Christodoulides, who is expected to brief members on the latest developments in the Cyprus issue.
The briefing follows last week’s contacts with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres and the European Union’s Special Envoy for Cyprus, Raffaele Fitto.
The president is also expected to outline the technical preparations under way for a new expanded meeting on the Cyprus issue.
Questions over Spanos’ appointment
Panayiotou had appointed Spanos as the party’s representative approximately one week ago.
In a video released by Direct Democracy, Panayiotou said that while he was in Brazil, he woke to find eight missed calls from the president. When they eventually spoke, he was told the matter had already been handled by the party’s vice-president, Diana Constantinidou, and Spanos.
Questions had emerged over whether Spanos was a registered member of Direct Democracy, which is a requirement for representing the party on the National Council.
Constantinidou later clarified that Spanos was a registered party member and that the issue had simply required clarification.
